Matchbox cars entered the world in 1952 after Lesney Product’s Jack Odell created a toy vehicle for his daughter to take to school, which was required to fit into a matchbox. The vehicle he created, the Road Roller, and two other vehicles were released in Matchbox’s first line of die-cast toy cars in 1953. Matchbox cars popularity grew all over England, then Europe and eventually the rest of the world.

Matchbox cars were also very popular in America when Hot Wheels were introduced in 1968. Hot Wheels took America by storm and nearly eliminated Matchbox’s market in the United States, but they remained popular in the rest of the world. Matchbox and Hot Wheels continued to rival each other for decades, and for this reason, this website will provide much information on Hot Wheels as well as Matchbox brands. A must read artile for first time visitors is Matchbox vs. Hot Wheels. You may also want to read more about Hot Wheels success and impact on Matchbox in 1968.
